Beryl spent her childhood in Bideford, North Devon and met her husband Jim in 1950, when she was 19. Jim was in the Royal Navy and his ship, the Belfast, docked at Instow. When they married, Jim went back to sea and came out of the Royal Navy in 1957. By this time, they had two children, John and Tina.
